Few restaurants can say their home has welcomed guests for more than 150 years. The story of Washington House began in 1871, when the original Tunis building, dating back to 1860, was transformed into the Washington House Hotel in the center of the village.
Over the decades, the building has lived many lives. It has served as a hotel, a boarding house, a tavern, a restaurant, and, according to local lore, even a hideout for bootleggers. Through it all, it has remained a familiar landmark and a place where the community comes together.
From 2013 to 2014, the building underwent a complete renovation that honored its history while preparing it for a new chapter. In May 2014, Washington House Restaurant opened its doors, reclaiming the building’s original name. We celebrated our 10th anniversary in 2024.
Our philosophy is simple: nourishing food made with ingredients that honor their time and place. Our kitchen focuses on contemporary American cuisine made with seasonal, locally sourced ingredients, while our bar offers signature cocktails and a curated wine list.
Today, Washington House welcomes guests for lunch, dinner, happy hour, and celebrations of every kind. We’re honored to be part of Basking Ridge’s history, and its future.
